SIS vs school management software: what’s the difference?

A student information system stores records, grades and attendance. School management software includes the SIS and adds communication, fees, learning, HR and reporting.

Schools often use “SIS,” “MIS” and “school management software” as if they were the same product. They overlap, and the difference matters when you are replacing a system or adding yet another login.

A student information system is the system of record. It stores who the student is, who the guardians are, which classes they take, whether they were present, and what grades they earned. In the UK the equivalent core is often called a school MIS. That record is essential. It is not, by itself, how a school talks to families, takes payments, or runs admissions.

What sits outside a traditional SIS

Many schools still bolt on a separate gradebook, a messaging app, a spreadsheet for fees, a form tool for permission slips, and a different login for the learning platform. Each one asks for the same student list. Each one drifts out of date. Parents miss the channel the school is not using that week.

School management software includes the SIS and the operations around it: admissions and re-enrollment, timetables, homework and assignments, announcements and two-way messaging, fee management, staff records, transport, library, health, behaviour, special education plans and analytics. SchoolManagee is built on that model so a school does not buy a student database and then a stack of satellites.

When a legacy SIS is the expensive option

Legacy SIS and MIS products often charge for the parent app, for messaging, or for the report the district actually needs. Some are web-only for families. Some still expect the school to host something. Migration is frequently a paid project.

A cloud school ERP prices the platform per student and includes the modules a K-12 school uses every week. The comparison that matters is not the name on the contract. It is whether SIS, gradebook, fees and messaging are one product, whether families have a native app, and whether onboarding is included.

How to choose

If you only need to store enrollment for a compliance extract, a narrow SIS can be enough. If teachers, the business office and families all need to work from the same day, you want school management software that happens to contain a full SIS. That is the distinction SchoolManagee is designed around: one student record, and the tools each role needs hanging off it.
